The New York Mets optioned prized pitching prospect Jonah Tong to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, ending his bid for a major league roster spot. The 22-year-old right-hander, who posted a 7.71 ERA in seven appearances last season, made two Grapefruit League starts this spring training.

Tong's rapid rise from seventh-round pick in the 2022 amateur draft to top prospect organization made him one of baseball's most intriguing young arms. The Canadian-born pitcher gained attention in 2024 while pitching at three minor league levels, showcasing his unique over-the-top delivery that often draws comparisons to former Giants star Tim Lincecum.

Despite his impressive trajectory, Tong's struggles in limited major league action last season and during spring training led to the demotion. The move allows him to continue developing in Syracuse while the Mets finalize their major league pitching staff for the upcoming season.
