Mets Experiment Dugout Pitch Signals

The New York Mets are testing dugout pitch-calling during spring training, following their division-rival Miami Marlins. Catcher Francisco Alvarez receives signals from coach J.P. Arencibia before relaying them to Kodai Senga via PitchCom. Manager Carlos Mendoza confirms they're working through this new approach while maintaining catcher autonomy in game decisions.

Unlike Miami's system, the Mets allow catchers to override dugout suggestions. As a big-market operation with top-two payroll for five consecutive seasons, the Mets bring significant resources to this experiment. The Marlins and Rockies have also explored similar strategies, though with different implementation approaches and team philosophies.

Looking to rebound from a disappointing 2025 season, the Mets added frontline starter Freddy Peralta and overhauled their bullpen with Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Luis Garcia. With Nolan McLean expected to compete for NL Rookie of the Year, the team opens next Thursday against Pittsburgh. Mendoza clarified that while the dugout may offer suggestions, catchers and pitchers remain in control of their game.
