Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd is set to return from the injured list Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies after missing three weeks with a biceps strain. The 35-year-old was named an All-Star last season in his first year with Chicago, posting a 3.21 ERA over 31 starts. Manager Craig Counsell confirmed Boyd will start the series opener against the Phillies.

Boyd's 2026 season has been limited to two starts, with a 6.75 ERA. He struggled in the season opener against Washington, allowing six runs in 3⅔ innings, but rebounded with 10 strikeouts in 5⅔ innings against the Angels on April 1 before landing on the injured list. His return adds veteran depth to Chicago's rotation.

Counsell also provided updates on injured relievers, noting that closer Daniel Palencia has a mild left lat strain confirmed by MRI. Palencia, who hasn't allowed a run in five innings this season, could resume throwing later this week. Reliever Porter Hodge underwent reconstructive elbow surgery with a 12-14 month recovery timeline.
