Manfred says Giants miscommunicated Pride cap policy

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred wrote to Republican Sen. Josh Hawley after the San Francisco Giants’ Pride Night sparked controversy. Several Giants, including starter Landen Roupp, stitched Bible verses onto the caps, violating league policy that bars messages on uniforms. Hawley called the warning “dubious,” arguing that MLB’s Pride uniforms already convey a stance. The league issued an oral warning but imposed no fines or discipline.

Manfred reminded Hawley that MLB adopted a 2023 rule limiting special apparel on celebration days, allowing exceptions only for narrow cases such as memorial patches. Both the Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers received a waiver to feature Pride emblems, provided no player or staff was forced to wear them and teams communicated the option clearly in the Pacific Coast division.

Manfred officially concluded the Giants’ internal rollout was “inadequate and not clear,” causing some players to think they must wear the modified caps. He noted the warning was issued before the communication lapse was discovered and affirmed that no further penalties will follow. The incident underscores the league’s tightrope between inclusive promotions and uniform policy enforcement.
