Lindor’s gaffes fuel Mets’ early-season woes

Francisco Lindor’s defensive lapses have become the talk of New York after the Mets fell 11-6 to Oakland on Saturday. In the second inning, a routine grounder to Marcus Semien should have produced a 4-6-3 double play, but Lindor chased the ball instead of covering second, forcing Semien to sprint for the out and allowing a run. That misplay sparked the fourth straight loss.

Through 15 games Lindor is batting .167 with a .546 OPS, tallying ten hits, ten walks and 13 strikeouts. His fielding woes add to an offense that has struggled since Juan Soto’s calf strain sidelined the left fielder. Lindor, now in the fifth year of a $341 million ten‑year extension, admitted he feels “locked in” but can’t explain the miscues.

Manager Carlos Mendoza called the errors “not him” and emphasized that Lindor’s preparation remains solid despite the odd positioning. With the Mets sitting 7-8, the team’s early season trajectory hinges on whether the shortstop can tighten his glove and contribute offensively, or if the slump forces a deeper reevaluation of the roster, ultimately before the postseason picture solidifies.
