Justin Verlander, a surefire Hall of Famer with three Cy Young Awards and two World Series titles, announced he will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The 43-year-old Verlander, set for his 10th All-Star Game appearance as a Legend Pick, has amassed 266 regular-season wins and 3,554 strikeouts over 21 MLB seasons.

Verlander cited a desire for the game to dictate his retirement timing rather than a specific milestone or date. He expressed full commitment to finishing the current season with his team, the Detroit Tigers, where his career began. This season has presented significant physical and mental challenges for Verlander, who has battled injuries including left hip inflammation and a hamstring strain.

Drafted second overall in 2004, Verlander enjoyed a dominant stretch with the Tigers before winning a World Series with the Houston Astros in 2017. He secured his third Cy Young Award in 2022 at age 39, following Tommy John surgery. Despite recent injury setbacks and a decline in production, Verlander ranks 24th all-time in Baseball-Reference wins above replacement (82.3) with a career 3.33 ERA and eighth all-time in strikeouts.
