The San Francisco Giants signed Venezuelan shortstop Luis Hernandez to a $5 million deal on the first day of the 2026 international signing period. Hernandez, the top-rated prospect in his class, left Venezuela's political turmoil for the Dominican Republic to finalize the agreement. His bonus was the largest given to any international amateur this year.

Giants senior director of international scouting Joe Salermo confirmed the team's scouts ensured all their targets, including Hernandez, were safe before traveling. The organization believes Hernandez's maturity is exceptional for a 17-year-old, noting his disciplined background and golf hobby as indicators of advanced development. He may skip the Dominican Summer League entirely.

The Giants' aggressive move comes as other teams finalized deals with other top prospects, including the Athletics and Phillies. The signing period allows clubs to sign players born between September 2008 and August 2009. Hernandez now joins San Francisco's farm system, with the team hoping his skills translate quickly to U.S. minor league ball.
