Dustin May's No-Hitter Bid Falls Short as Brewers Rally for 2-1 Win

Dustin May carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning Wednesday, but the Milwaukee Brewers broke through with three hits and two runs to steal a 2-1 victory from the St. Louis Cardinals. Garrett Mitchell opened the eighth with a double and Luis Rengifo followed with a single, ending May's bid for history at American Family Field.

May (3-6) departed after allowing two hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out nine on 87 pitches. The hard-luck effort came during a rough stretch for St. Louis, which has dropped seven of nine games. The Cardinals' lone run came in the fourth when Jordan Walker singled and Bryan Torres tripled.

Milwaukee starter Chad Patrick yielded five hits and one run in four innings before Shane Drohan, Aaron Ashby and Trevor Megill combined for five scoreless frames. Ashby improved to 9-0 and moved into the MLB lead in wins, while Megill notched his sixth save in seven opportunities. The victory kept Milwaukee atop the National League Central, where they've won 15 of their last 19 games.

For May, it was another missed opportunity in a season that's fallen short of expectations. The Cardinals need more than quality starts to snap out of their current funk.
