The Cubs acquired right-hander Aaron Civale and cash from the Athletics for minor league righty Aiden Moffett after a 6-2 win over Minnesota on Saturday. This marks Civale's second stint with Chicago after he split the 2025 season among the Brewers, White Sox, and Cubs.

Civale, 31, is 5-7 with a 5.42 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) this season with Oakland, who designated him for assignment Wednesday. He signed a one-year contract with the A's in February. During his previous Cubs tenure, Civale posted a 1-0 record with a 2.08 ERA in five relief appearances over 13 innings, plus 4⅓ scoreless postseason innings against Milwaukee. He is 48-51 with a 4.26 ERA over eight major league seasons with six teams.

Chicago's pitching staff has been ravaged by injuries. Cade Horton is out for the season following Tommy John surgery, while Jameson Taillon (hamstring), Edward Cabrera (hamstring/abductor), Ben Brown (neck), and Justin Steele (elbow) remain sidelined. Moffett, 22, holds a 1-2 record with a 9.67 ERA in 17 relief games across the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Myrtle Beach.
