The St. Louis Cardinals have signed manager Oliver Marmol to a two-year contract extension with a club option for the 2029 season, the team announced Sunday. Marmol, 39, has compiled a 325-323 record in his four seasons with the Cardinals, who have missed the playoffs for three consecutive years.

Despite the team's recent struggles, Cardinals president Chaim Bloom praised Marmol's commitment to the organization's values and his work with the young core. The Cardinals finished fourth in the NL Central last season with a 78-84 record. Marmol becomes the third-longest tenured manager in the National League behind the Dodgers' Dave Roberts and the Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo.

Marmol faces the challenge of developing a very young and unproven lineup, highlighted by infielder JJ Wetherholt, a top Rookie of the Year candidate for 2026. With only three players over 30 on the 40-man roster, Bloom's first year of rebuilding efforts will heavily depend on Marmol's ability to maximize the potential of St. Louis's youthful roster.
