Cal Raleigh Stays Confident Amid Mariners' Early Struggles

Cal Raleigh believes the Seattle Mariners can still turn their season around, even as the switch-hitting catcher continues to search for his form after a career year. The 29-year-old finished runner-up for American League MVP honors in 2025, when he set the single-season record for home runs by a catcher with 60, helping Seattle come within one win of its first World Series berth.

Raleigh is hitting just .177 with a .538 OPS through 25 games, his lowest since his rookie season. The Mariners sit at 10-15, in fourth place in the AL West ahead of only the struggling Houston Astros, following Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Athletics.

First baseman Josh Naylor remains below the Mendoza line, and while Julio Rodríguez has heated up lately, he's not hitting for the power Seattle has come to expect. The team ranks 15th in home runs with just 23, and only two clubs have a lower collective batting average than Seattle's .218.

"I have faith in this group," Raleigh said. The Mariners swept the Astros before dropping six of their next eight games, proving there's no quick fix ahead.
