Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers suffered a broken big toe on his right foot and was omitted from Tuesday’s lineup versus the San Francisco Giants. The injury occurred Monday when he fouled a ball off his foot during the 3-0 loss. The Milwaukee Brewers’ home‑run leader, who has hit 18 home runs this season, left the game after walking gingerly off the field and the team adjusted the lineup for the remainder of the series.

An X‑ray initially revealed a fracture line, and additional testing Tuesday confirmed the extent of the damage. Bauers said he had an MRI and CT scan that morning, and doctors determined the break was likely an old injury that had existed before the game.

He noted that the old injury only causes swelling and a little pain. “If it was new it would have been just pain management,” he said. “The fact that it’s old is probably better.” He expects to recover once the swelling subsides.

The Brewers have not set a specific return date, but Bauers remains optimistic that he will be fine when the swelling goes down and that he can return once the doctors are satisfied with his progress.
