Brewers Release Third Baseman Luis Rengifo After Poor Start

The Milwaukee Brewers have released infielder Luis Rengifo, ending his tenure as the team's primary third baseman just months after signing him to a $3.5 million contract. Rengifo opened the season as the starter at third but struggled significantly at the plate, hitting just .205 with no home runs and 19 RBIs across 57 games. His lack of production ultimately cost him the job as Milwaukee sought improvement at the hot corner.

The Brewers designated Rengifo for assignment on June 16 when they promoted shortstop Cooper Pratt from Triple-A Nashville. Rengifo shared third base duties with David Hamilton throughout the season, making 45 starts while Hamilton accounted for 28 more. Despite the opportunity to prove himself as an everyday player, Rengifo's offensive numbers fell well below expectations for a corner infielder, leading to this roster move.

Rengifo joined Milwaukee after seven seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, hoping to establish himself as a regular starter. The veteran infielder had previously shown more promise with the Angels but couldn't translate that success to his new team. His release frees up roster space and potentially allows younger players to compete for playing time at third base.

Meanwhile, outfielder Brandon Lockridge will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday after experiencing increased discomfort from a right knee laceration and bone bruise. Lockridge hasn't played since May 8 and is expected to return in late July, adding another injury concern to Milwaukee's roster challenges this season.
