The Athletics have hired Taylor Smith as president of baseball operations, two months after the club said former general manager David Forst would not return next season. The franchise made the move on Monday, hoping it helps the team in its final year in West Sacramento, California, and for the 2028 season in Las Vegas.
Smith spent the previous two years with the Boston Red Sox as assistant general manager and worked for the Tampa Bay Rays for seven seasons. His hiring comes as the Athletics continue to build around a young roster in their second season playing at a Triple-A ballpark in West Sacramento.
The club finished the season 64-98. Assistant general manager Dan Feinstein has been serving as interim GM while the organization restructures its baseball operations leadership.
Forst had been general manager since 2015 and with the organization since 2000, making his departure a significant change for the franchise. The Athletics are preparing for a transitional period as they move toward their planned Las Vegas stadium, with the team's immediate focus on developing its roster and competing in West Sacramento before the move.
