The Oakland Athletics have hired former Colorado Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt as a special assistant to their scouting department. Schmidt, who led the Rockies from 2021 to 2025, brings decades of experience to a franchise navigating a temporary move to West Sacramento before its planned Las Vegas relocation.

Schmidt’s deep resume includes 25 years with the Rockies, where he was senior VP and GM. His career began with the Reds in the 1980s and includes roles with the Yankees and Cleveland. He was named the 2019 West Coast Scout of the Year, reflecting his long-standing reputation in player evaluation.

This hiring comes as the Athletics prepare for their temporary stint in Sacramento and a future $2 billion ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip, slated for a 2028 opening. The move signals the A's are leaning on seasoned scouting expertise to build their roster during this transitional period.
