Vanderbilt secured a major recruiting victory Tuesday, landing Gabe Nesmith, a top-20 guard in the class of 2027. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Atlanta chose the Commodores over Providence, giving coach Mark Byington his highest-ranked recruit ever. Nesmith, ranked No. 20 nationally and No. 3 at his position, plays for Overtime Elite.

During his recruitment, Vanderbilt's loyalty stood out when Nesmith suffered a broken foot during a visit. The program continued recruiting him aggressively despite the injury, which left a lasting impression. On the court, he averaged 18.6 points for the Nightrydas on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring, including 22.5 points in four Session III games in Kansas City. His scoring versatility and ability to finish through contact make him a coveted prospect.

Nesmith's connection to Vanderbilt runs deep - his cousin Aaron played two seasons there before reaching the NBA with the Indiana Pacers. Mark Byington built momentum from the 2026 cycle, when Vanderbilt landed three SC Next 100 recruits and finished with the No. 17 class nationally after a seven-year drought without top-100 commitments. This commitment signals the program's recruiting resurgence.

The rising senior's combination of size, skill, and basketball IQ positions him as an immediate impact player. Vanderbilt's patient, relationship-driven approach under Byington continues attracting elite talent, strengthening their roster for future SEC competition.
