UNC Basketball Coaching Search: Billy Donovan, Brad Stevens Among Top Targets

North Carolina has fired head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons, including a national championship game appearance in 2022. The decision came just five days after the Tar Heels' shocking collapse against VCU, blowing a 19-point lead in their NCAA tournament opener. Davis, who played for the Tar Heels under Dean Smith, leaves with a 24-8 record this season but couldn't overcome the devastating loss of star forward Caleb Wilson to injury.

The coaching vacancy comes with significant challenges beyond just finding a replacement. Longtime athletic director Bubba Cunningham is departing this summer, to be succeeded by former NASCAR executive Steve Newmark. The athletic department also faces decisions about renovating the Dean Smith Center or potentially moving the basketball team elsewhere. With Bill Belichick now in town, the football program is receiving increased resources and attention.

Sources indicate North Carolina will target high-profile candidates including former Florida coach Billy Donovan, Boston Celtics president Brad Stevens, and top college coaches like Arizona's Tommy Lloyd, Michigan's Dusty May, and Alabama's Nate Oats. Several candidates come with massive buyouts - Todd Golden's would cost $16 million, while Nate Oats' ranges from $18 million until April 1. The Tar Heels must also navigate recruiting retention, particularly with top-10 recruit Dylan Mingo and key players like transfer Henri Veesaar, who averaged 17.0 points and 8.7 rebounds this season.
