Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton wrote to Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and board chair Douglas Girod, warning the league that any sanction against Texas Tech for fielding quarterback Brendan Sorsby would be unlawful. A Texas judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction after the NCAA ruled him ineligible for wagering on college sports. Paxton argues the conference would face massive exposure if it proceeds.

Big 12 presidents convened Thursday to debate invoking Bylaw 3.6, which permits sanctions with a super‑majority vote. Athletic directors from the other fifteen members voiced unanimous opposition to Sorsby’s participation, and TCU and Kansas State hinted they might refuse to schedule games with Texas Tech. Paxton estimated the conference’s total exposure could exceed $200 million, citing lost revenue, alumni donations and recruitment damages.

Conference commissioner Brett Yormark said the league will consult counsel before the full board meets next week, keeping all options open. If the Big 12 issues a sanction that cancels or alters Texas Tech’s schedule, Paxton warned of antitrust, breach‑of‑contract and tortious‑interference claims. The dispute now hangs over the Red Raiders’ season and the league’s governance today.
