Tennessee Lady Vols Eliminated in First Round

The Tennessee Lady Vols suffered a crushing 76-61 defeat to North Carolina State in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday, marking their eighth consecutive loss and ending their season. The seventh-seeded Wolfpack dominated the 10th-seeded Lady Vols, who had only missed the NCAA tournament twice since its inception in 1982.

This loss represents a dramatic fall for a program that won eight national championships under legendary coach Pat Summitt. The Lady Vols (16-14) entered the tournament with a first-round loss to Ball State in 2009 and UCLA in 2019 as their only previous first-round exits. Second-year coach Kim Caldwell called it "the worst year of my professional career" after the team's first eight-game losing streak in modern history.

Tennessee fell behind 19-4 early and despite briefly cutting the deficit to two points late in the third quarter, couldn't sustain momentum. Senior Zee Spearman acknowledged the team's struggles, saying they "just couldn't get out of it." The loss extends Caldwell's NCAA tournament record to 0-2 and raises serious questions about the program's direction after failing to win in March and posting its fewest victories since 2018.
