Stan Wawrinka played his final French Open match on Monday, falling to Jesper de Jong 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round at Roland Garros. The 41-year-old Swiss, who announced his retirement at the end of the season, fought hard despite temperatures hitting 33 degrees, receiving a heartfelt ovation from the Parisian crowd.

This was Wawrinka's 21st appearance at the tournament where he won the 2015 title and reached the 2017 final. "It's hard to say goodbye to you here," an emotional Wawrinka told the crowd. "It's because of Roland Garros that I wanted to become a tennis player." He got fans doing a Mexican wave and received video messages from Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Sinner, Alcaraz and Monfils.

Wawrinka finishes his career with three Grand Slam titles — the Australian Open in 2014, Roland Garros in 2015, and the US Open in 2016, winning each against the world No. 1 player. He beat Nadal, Djokovic and Federer at Grand Slams and was one of the few players to defeat all four greats. He also won Olympic doubles gold with Federer in 2008 and the Davis Cup for Switzerland in 2014.
