Cruz Azul clinches Liga MX Clausura title with stoppage-time winner

Rodolfo Rotondi scored a stoppage-time winner as Cruz Azul rallied past Pumas 2-1 to capture the Liga MX Clausura title on Sunday. Two years after conceding a penalty that cost his team the 2024 final, the Argentine midfielder found redemption with a dramatic late goal. La Maquina secured its first championship since the Clausura 2021 tournament, lifting the club's total to 10 Liga MX titles.

Robert Morales put Pumas ahead with a 30th-minute strike from outside the box, but an own goal in the 53rd minute forced extra time. Cruz Azul's comeback unfolded under interim coach Joel Huiqui, who took charge after Nicolas Larcamon was fired in the penultimate round. Pumas finished the match with nine players following red cards for Uriel Antuna and Angel Rico late in the game.

Rotondi described the moment as a release after two years of waiting. Pumas, chasing its first title since 2011, fell short despite Efrain Juarez's efforts. Cruz Azul now sits just behind América, who holds 16 titles, and Chivas and Toluca with 12 each. Huiqui became the first Mexican coach to win Liga MX since Ignacio Ambriz in 2020.
