Shedeur Sanders Shows Major Growth Ahead of Browns QB Battle

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry called rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders a “work in progress” after the 2025 season, then praised his “phenomenal” offseason growth. Sanders finished his rookie year with seven touchdowns and ten interceptions in eight starts, posting 275 combined scramble, rush and passing yards – the eighth‑most in the league over his final eight games. He remains under a rookie contract.

Analysts noted Sanders still hesitated too long, averaging a 3.24‑second release – the slowest among NFL starters since his debut. Only 53.3% of his throws fell within the ideal 2.5‑4‑second window, while 18.9% were extended, generating 14 pressures and three sacks. Quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian praised faster footwork and quicker progressions as he absorbed Todd Monken’s system.

Monken left the starter’s slot open after mandatory minicamp, extending the QB battle between Sanders and veteran Deshaun Watson into training camp. Owner Jimmy Haslam highlighted Sanders’ year‑round presence in Cleveland as evidence of his dedication. If Sanders can translate his improved timing and footwork into live, padded situations, he could solidify a role in an offense that demands rapid decision‑making.
