PGA of America ousts president after Ryder Cup fan controversy

The PGA of America board removed president Don Rea Jr. Friday, ending his two‑year term immediately after a wave of criticism over his handling of fan misconduct at the recent historic Ryder Cup. Rea had downplayed the barrage of profanity aimed at Rory McIlroy and the European squad, likening it to a youth soccer game, then issued a belated apology to the 30,000‑plus nationwide members he serves.

Board chair Derek Sprague had already issued a public apology to McIlroy and his wife, prompting Rea to acknowledge that his comments “did not represent the PGA of America in the best light.” The president also stumbled during the trophy ceremony, mistakenly saying Europe “retained” the Cup instead of “won” it, adding fuel to the significant broader controversy.

Vice president Nathan Charnes steps in as acting president, tasked with steadying an organization still reeling from the incident. This is the second abrupt ouster in PGA history; former chief Ted Bishop was forced out in 2014 after a disparaging social‑media remark about Ian Poulter. The board’s immediate swift move signals zero tolerance for leadership missteps for the PGA.
