Oklahoma AG Presses Big 12 to Suspend Sorsby

Oklahoma attorney general Gentner Drummond has asked the Big 12 to suspend Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, joining a widening dispute over whether the Red Raiders can field a player the NCAA declared permanently ineligible for extensive sports wagering. In a letter to commissioner Brett Yormark and board chairman Douglas Girod, Drummond said Texas Tech should face sanctions for obtaining Sorsby's eligibility.

Drummond dismissed threats from Texas attorney general Ken Paxton as meritless, arguing the conference can enforce its own bylaws because it was not part of Sorsby's court case in Lubbock. Judge Ken Curry granted Sorsby a temporary injunction Monday, allowing him to practice and play this fall after a two-game suspension, while the NCAA appeals the ruling.

The dispute has put the league's other 15 universities firmly against Sorsby's return, with the executive board meeting Thursday and a full board meeting set for Monday. Yormark said all options remain open. Drummond urged action under Bylaw 3.6, which allows sanctions when a member acts against the conference's best interests. Texas Tech says it backs Sorsby and his recovery from gambling addiction, but the league now faces a legal and integrity fight before the season.
