The New York Liberty are searching for a new head coach for the second consecutive offseason after parting ways with Chris De Marco just one year after hiring him. De Marco, who came to Brooklyn after over a decade with the Golden State Warriors and coaching the Bahamas men's national team, led the team to a 26-18 record and a Commissioner's Cup title. However, the Liberty finished with their worst win percentage since 2023 and were swept by the Atlanta Dream in the semifinals after initially sweeping the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx.
The disappointing exit prompted star player Breanna Stewart to critique the team's inconsistency, highlighting the high expectations within the franchise. General manager Jonathan Kolb stated they must "nail this" coaching search to satisfy players like Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, who are eager to win championships. This departure continues a trend of WNBA teams firing coaches after a single season, leaving the Liberty to find a leader who can elevate their defense and manage a star-studded roster.
