NC State is in advanced talks to hire Philip Rivers as its next football coach, sources told ESPN. Rivers, a program legend who played quarterback from 2000 to 2003, led the Wolfpack to four straight bowl games under Chuck Amato. The 44-year-old is in his sixth season coaching St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama.
Rivers requested to finish the current high school season before transitioning to college football. His son, Gunner, recently committed to play for NC State but was shut down with a knee injury. Dave Doeren was fired Oct. 24.
Russell Wilson was also discussed for the position. Rivers holds nearly every NC State and ACC passing record with 13,484 yards and 95 touchdowns. In the NFL, he played 17 seasons with the Chargers and started three games for the Indianapolis Colts last year after injuries to Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard.
NC State is expected to make an official announcement soon.
