NC State Considers Legal Action Against LSU Over Will Wade Departure

NC State is exploring potential legal claims against LSU regarding men's basketball coach Will Wade's departure to coach the Tigers. Vice chancellor Allison B. Newhart sent a letter to LSU's Carlton Jones outlining the investigation, which centers on whether LSU violated North Carolina state law through improper conduct.

Wade left NC State after one season in March, just before his buyout would have decreased from $5 million to $3 million. Athletic director Boo Corrigan negotiated the amount down to $4 million to expedite the coaching search that resulted in Justin Gainey's hiring. NC State received the $4 million payment on May 8.

The investigation focuses on whether LSU improperly induced Wade to breach his contract or interfered with the termination timing to reduce liquidated damages owed to NC State. Newhart's letter specifically mentions potential violations of the state's Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

NC State received three emails from LSU requesting a release of claims, but maintains it will not sign any such agreement. The school considers the matter resolved only regarding Wade's personal obligations, leaving LSU potentially exposed to financial damages and attorney fees under state law.
