NAACP Calls for Athlete Boycott Over Voting Rights Restrictions

The NAACP is urging Black athletes and fans to boycott athletic programs at public universities in states restricting voting rights. Their new "Out of Bounds" campaign targets Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and South Carolina, arguing these states have moved to limit Black voting representation.

If successful, the boycott could deplete rosters for major college football and basketball programs across the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference. The NAACP notes that Black athletes generate hundreds of millions in revenue for these programs while their communities face voting restrictions.

Civil rights groups are mobilizing economic pressure after the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act, leading Republican-led states to eliminate majority-Black congressional districts. The Congressional Black Caucus is also pressuring the SEC, ACC and NCAA to oppose redistricting efforts.

The campaign frames athletic success as disconnected from political power, asking why Black talent builds institutional wealth while political voices are silenced. The boycott represents a new tactic in the ongoing fight over voting access in Southern states.
