Alabama Democrats Seek Black Backlash Over Voting Rights

Democrats in Alabama and beyond are trying to harness Black anger over the Supreme Court’s weakening of the Voting Rights Act and the Republican redistricting that followed. The Court’s 2023 decision in Allen v. Milligan upheld a lower court’s finding that Alabama’s congressional map likely violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, but allowed the map to remain in place for the 2022 elections while litigation continued.

In response, Democratic organizers are mobilizing Black voters through church networks, community groups, and digital outreach, emphasizing the perceived dilution of Black voting strength in the new districts. They argue that the map reduces the number of districts where Black voters could elect candidates of their choice, despite the state’s growing Black population.

Party leaders say the backlash could translate into increased turnout and support for Democratic candidates in upcoming state and federal elections, though they acknowledge that overcoming the structural advantages built into the map will require sustained effort and resources.
