Minnesota fired women's hockey coach Brad Frost on Tuesday after 19 seasons, ending his tenure following a home loss to Northeastern in the NCAA quarterfinals. Athletic director Mark Coyle announced the decision, citing the program's failure to contend at the highest level in recent years. Frost, who earned about $300,000 annually, was in the final year of his contract.

Frost took over in 2007 from program founder Laura Halldorson and built a powerhouse, winning national titles in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016. His teams reached the NCAA Frozen Four four times since 2016, but Minnesota hasn't won a championship since 2016. Conference rivals Ohio State and Wisconsin have dominated, claiming every national title since 2018.

Under Frost, Minnesota produced five Olympians from the gold-medal-winning U.S. team, including captain Abbey Murphy and former standouts Taylor Heise, Kelly Pannek, Lee Stecklein, and Grace Zumwinkle. Frost compiled a 554-133-43 record, the most wins in program history. "Brad is a great coach and an even better person," Coyle said in a statement, acknowledging the difficulty of the decision after a comprehensive review of the program.
