Keelon Russell threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score as Alabama defeated Mississippi State 56-23 in Starkville. The sophomore quarterback completed 16-of-22 passes for 285 yards and no interceptions, outplaying Heisman front-runner Kamari Taylor, who committed three turnovers. Alabama center Racin Delgatty struck a Heisman pose after the game in honor of Russell's performance.
Russell downplayed the Heisman talk, saying he's focused on improving each week rather than accolades. Alabama coach Kalen De Boer praised Russell's growth, noting his improved decision-making and leadership in practice and games.
Taylor, hobbled by injury, struggled with two interceptions and a fumble, echoing his earlier-season issues before rebounding. Russell's strong showing improved his Heisman odds to third-best according to DraftKings.
After the game, Russell and Taylor, former recruiting classmates, spoke briefly. Russell encouraged Taylor, calling him an amazing athlete who will be a heck of a player despite the setback.
