American speedskater Jordan Stolz claimed gold in the men's 1,000 meters at the Milan Cortina Games, setting a new Olympic record of 1:06.28. The 21-year-old Wisconsin native, who dreamed of Olympic glory since childhood, dominated the field with a performance that left competitors nearly a full second behind.

Stolz's victory marks the first U.S. medal in the men's 1,000 meters since Shani Davis's gold in 2010. Skating in the next-to-last pairing at Milano Speed Skating Stadium, Stolz overcame early pressure from Dutch skater Jennings de Boo to secure the win. His time broke the previous Olympic standard of 1:07.18 set in 2002.

The win positions Stolz as a potential multi-gold medalist in Milan, with three more events ahead including the 500 meters and 1,500. His dominance this season - winning all five World Cup races at this distance - made him the favorite, and he delivered under pressure despite a fall at U.S. trials just weeks earlier.
