Indiana University will erect a bronze statue of legendary basketball coach Bob Knight, permanently displayed beside the 1976 national championship statues at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The announcement coincided with a halftime ceremony honoring Knight's undefeated 1975-76 team during Monday's game against Oregon.

Athletic director Scott Dolson, who began his career as a student manager under Knight, emphasized the coach's transformative impact. Knight won three national championships at Indiana from 1971-2000, compiling a 662-239 record in Bloomington. His 902 career victories rank fifth all-time among Division I men's coaches.

The Hall of Famer, who died in 2023 at 83, also led Team USA to Olympic gold in 1984. His 1976 squad remains the last undefeated NCAA men's champion. An anonymous donor funded the statue, which Dolson called "a well-deserved tribute" to Knight's demanding preparation standards and basketball innovations.

Trustees chair Quinn Buckner, a starter on the 1976 team, echoed sentiments that Knight's coaching legacy remains unmatched. The statue solidifies Knight's physical presence at Indiana after years of strained relations following his 2000 firing.
