ATLANTA -- Alberto Mendoza has emerged as the frontrunner for Georgia Tech's starting quarterback position following an impressive spring game performance. The transfer from Indiana completed 12 of 16 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown, earning the offensive captain role and praise from head coach Brent Key.

Key declared Mendoza "the guy" after watching him lead the offense effectively during Saturday's spring showcase. The coach emphasized that while Mendoza must still compete for the job, he's done nothing to disappoint the coaching staff. Grady Adamson, another contender to replace dual-threat star Haynes King, threw for 104 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score.

Mendoza's arrival comes on the heels of winning a national championship at Indiana, where he backed up his older brother Fernando Mendoza, expected to be the No. 1 pick in next week's NFL draft. The Yellow Jackets have bolstered their roster through the transfer portal, adding 19 players including running back Justice Haynes. With spring practice complete, Mendoza appears poised to take over as Georgia Tech's new offensive leader.
