Justin Gaethje seized the UFC lightweight championship at the White House, forcing Ilia Topuria to retire on the stool after a brutal four‑round battle. The bout, staged on the South Lawn for a crowd of 4,000, saw Gaethje outslug and outlast the heavy favorite in a fight many called a Fight of the Year today.

Topuria entered the contest on a generational run, having knocked out former champions Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira to claim featherweight and lightweight titles. Despite his streak, he had never faced a back‑and‑forth clash like the one Gaethje engineered after winning the interim title in January in the early part of the season.

Topuria landed vicious body shots in round two, while Gaethje returned power punches in round three that broke his opponent’s face. After the doctor allowed the bout to continue, Gaethje’s relentless knee to the ribs and uppercuts forced Topuria’s corner to stop the fight at the end of Round 4.

With the title secured, Gaethje addressed speculation of retirement, saying he promised his mother he would not quit tonight. The victory crowns him the undisputed lightweight champion, reshaping the division’s hierarchy and adding a new contender to the lineage that began with the interim title win earlier in the year.
