The Dallas Wings have secured Alanna Smith with a three-year max contract, her agent confirmed to ESPN. The 6-foot-4 forward brings elite defensive credentials after earning co-Defensive Player of the Year honors with the Minnesota Lynx in 2025. Smith's arrival caps a productive free agency for Dallas, which also re-signed Arike Ogunbowale and Awak Kuier while adding Jessica Shepard.

Smith's defensive prowess stands out - she averaged 1.9 blocks and 1.3 steals per game last season while earning her second all-defensive team nod. The Stanford alum has been a consistent force since entering the league in 2019, winning bronze with Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics where she made the All-Star Five. Her championship with Mist B.C. in the Unrivaled league this offseason demonstrates her winning pedigree.

This marks the second Lynx starter to depart this offseason, following Bridget Carleton's selection by Portland in the expansion draft. Minnesota has also lost reserves Shepard, Natisha Hiedeman, Karlie Samuelson, and Maria Kliundikova. For Dallas, Smith joins a roster that already boasts the No. 1 pick in Monday's draft - their second consecutive top selection after landing Paige Bueckers in 2025. The Wings are clearly positioning themselves as contenders in the competitive WNBA landscape.
