UMass kicked off Week 1 by upsetting Rutgers, overturning its preseason spot atop ESPN’s Bottom 10. The Minutemen ended a 16-game losing streak and delivered their best opening effort since the Lexington Green.

The result also damaged Rutgers, ranked first at 0-1 after the Scarlet Knights were stunned by UMess. Greg Schiano’s early struggles in Piscataway recalled the fan uproar that led Tennessee to rescind his 2017 job offer.

Other Bottom 10 entries included Charlotte, Northern Illinois, Kent State, Clemson and Mizzou. Charlotte improved against The Citadel before visiting Ole Miss. Northern Illinois lost 40-0 at Iowa but earned $1.6 million, while Kent State fell 57-0 at South Carolina and received $1.3 million. Clemson was embarrassed 51-10 by LSU.

The rankings, written by Ryan Mc Gee, trace the program’s recent history from a 2014 loss to Boston College. UMass had been absent from the poll less than 10% of the time during the following dozen seasons.
