State of Devs 2026 survey results: developers are exhausted

Nearly half of respondents in the State of Devs 2026 survey reported job insecurity and insufficient wages, while a quarter had been laid off at some point in their careers. Approximately one in ten respondents were laid off within the last nine months, and over a quarter anticipated needing to change careers within five years due to factors beyond their control.

For the first time, Devographics asked developers about their mental state, revealing concerning trends. Around two-thirds reported feeling less motivated and more cynical, while half struggled with focus, procrastination, and feelings of inadequacy. Sixty-two percent experienced burnout at some point in their careers, with affected developers reporting lower happiness and ongoing health issues.

AI emerged as a major source of uncertainty, with views heavily polarized: 49% felt positive toward AI while 42% held negative opinions. Nearly half reported that AI tools negatively impacted their mental state, citing concerns about addictive prompting, undermined learning, and cognitive overload termed "AI brainfry." Over 1,500 respondents shared written feedback, frequently mentioning the need for safe AI usage, reduced work satisfaction, and unrealistic productivity expectations from management.

Despite rapid technological shifts, some issues persist slowly. Female-identifying developers continue facing higher rates of discrimination, often altering behavior, appearance, or career paths in response to workplace challenges.
