Doc Rivers turned down an NBC analyst offer in 1996 because he couldn't promise then-chairman Dick Ebersol he wouldn't coach. Now, with his Hall of Fame coaching career over, he joins NBC as an analyst on games across NBC, Peacock and NBCSN, plus possible studio work.

"I honestly can say I'm absolutely retired," Rivers told The Associated Press. "I had a long run. It ended up in the [Naismith] Hall of Fame [earlier this year]... For the first time, I can focus on giving TV my 100% attention."

Rivers is sixth on the NBA's career coaching wins list (1,194) and games list (2,059). In nine seasons with Boston, he led the Celtics to the 2008 NBA title and returned to the finals two years later. He also coached Orlando, the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia and Milwaukee.

NBC's coverage begins Oct. 20 with three games, including Boston at Detroit and Oklahoma City vs. San Antonio. The marquee game: the New York Knicks host Philadelphia in LeBron James' 76ers debut.
