World Championship
Latvia stunned the U.S. 4-2 as Sandis Vilmanis delivered two empty-net goals, marking the defending champions' third loss in the tournament and a major upset in the standings. The victory vaults Latvia into a tie for second place in their group, while the U.S. now faces a must-win scenario to secure a quarterfinal berth.
Junior Hockey
The Everett Silvertips, fresh off the WHL title, opened the Memorial Cup with a 5-3 win over Chicoutimi. Right wing Jesse Heslop scored, and the Tips' balanced attack overcame a slow start to set up a potential semifinal clash against the host Kelowna Rockets.
