Hungary’s Deputy Governor Zoltan Kurali and OTP Bank CEO Peter Csanyi emphasized the importance of staying on the euro accession roadmap, with Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s government aiming to meet entry criteria by 2030. Despite high budget deficits and public debt, the administration will detail its euro ambitions in upcoming fiscal plans, stressing credibility and investor confidence. Financial markets have rallied in anticipation, and Csanyi highlighted potential benefits for lenders, citing OTP’s experiences in Bulgaria and Croatia.

OTP is also seeking regulatory approval to acquire Baltic lender Luminor Bank AS, which would increase its euro area exposure beyond 50%. Central bank officials view abandoning the forint as a step toward improving Hungary’s credit rating and shedding emerging‑market status.
