Swansea City head coach Vitor Matos believes his side are on the way to reviving the possession-based style that defined the club's golden Premier League era. The Swans sit top of the early Championship table with 10 points from four games after a standout midweek win over Watford, ahead of Saturday's Welsh derby against Wrexham.

Matos, appointed in November 2025, says his aim is to rebuild the club's DNA — the stylish football associated with former managers Roberto Martinez, Brendan Rodgers and Michael Laudrup. Under Martinez from 2007, Swansea rose from the third tier to the Premier League by 2011 and won the League Cup in 2013, their only major trophy. A later shift in style contributed to their 2018 relegation.

Since then, various coaches have tried to restore both top-flight status and the trademark approach. Matos feels his new-look team are showing promising moments of that identity. "We have something special growing, we have something that everyone feels proud of," he said, while cautioning against complacency given football's unpredictability.
