General Catalyst's viral VC beef with a16z stirs industry drama

General Catalyst released a deliberately provocative video on X that parodies the classic Mac vs. PC commercials, pitching a 2.4 million views campaign that frames the firm as more selective than peers like a16z. The skit features a disheveled VC character pitching an AI robotic dog, only to have GC reject the deal by citing its high bar for responsibility. It's a bold brand play that cost nothing to produce but generated massive engagement.

The jab at a16z isn't random. Andreessen Horowitz has backed controversial bets including surveillance startup Flock Safety, AI notetaker Cluely, and Adam Neumann's Flow. GC's own portfolio includes Anduril, Percepta, and Polymarket, so the criticism cuts both ways. Andreessen fired back calling GC "smarmy" and riffing on their own counter-campaign, proving the rage bait landed exactly where intended.

The comment section became its own spectacle. VCs compared the feud to Kendrick vs. Drake for finance nerds, while a16z partners rallied around Andreessen. GC hasn't publicly clarified its message, but the video achieved its goal: it made General Catalyst a household name in VC Twitter for a day.
