Accel has closed a new $550 million India fund, less than two years after its previous India-focused vehicle, as part of a coordinated $3.5 billion global fundraising effort. The fund was oversubscribed and closed within weeks, with over 55% of the previous $650 million fund still available, people familiar told TechCrunch.\n\nThe firm bets India's next startup wave will be driven by AI, consumer internet, fintech, and advanced manufacturing. "AI is becoming a horizontal technology," said partner Shekhar Kirani. Accel expects deployment from the new fund to begin in 2027; until then, it will invest from the prior vehicle.\n\nPartners see opportunity in AI applications and enterprise software built on existing models rather than competing with OpenAI or Anthropic.

Barath Shankar Subramanian noted rapid AI adoption among Indian consumers and businesses, creating a growing domestic market alongside global software plays. Accel writes the first institutional check in roughly 80% of the companies it backs, a strategy that yielded early bets on Flipkart, Swiggy, Freshworks, and Zetwerk.\n\nThe India fund was one of four raised simultaneously, including a $1.35 billion growth vehicle that can back breakout companies from any region. Kirani said investor preference drove the coordinated process, reflecting a shift in entrepreneur quality: "The quality of ideas and founders are significantly better than what we have ever seen.".
