Tom Adeyoola, the newly appointed head of Innovate UK, aims to transform the agency's complex operations into a streamlined support system for British businesses. Having taken over from his entrepreneurial background, Adeyoola acknowledges the organization's reputation for grants but admits its internal processes remain difficult to navigate. With £4.4bn allocated through 2030, Innovate UK possesses substantial resources that need clearer pathways for businesses to access effectively.

The agency, which has supported over 24,000 businesses since 2007, is transitioning from project-specific funding to comprehensive company development. Innovate UK will introduce an "account manager type structure" to guide businesses proactively through available resources. Adeyoola emphasizes that founders shouldn't waste time navigating bureaucracy, stating that all services must act as "propellant" for growth rather than distractions.

Grant applications will undergo significant transformation within 12 months to counter AI-assisted submissions, with evaluation shifting from written proposals to execution capabilities. Beyond funding, Innovate UK connects companies with policymakers, regulators, and additional funders like the British Business Bank. This initiative complements recent UK government efforts to position Britain as a global tech hub, including quantum computing investments and support for emerging technologies.
