The UK government unveiled a £1.1bn AI Hardware Plan on Monday, targeting domestic semiconductor capabilities as global competition intensifies. Tech Secretary Liz Kendall positioned the investment as essential for Britain to capture market share in AI infrastructure, which analysts project could reach $1tn worldwide by the early 2030s.

The package allocates £750m toward a national AI supercomputer slated for deployment in 2030, positioning it among the world's most advanced systems. Within this, £400m targets next-generation semiconductors including inference chips, while £150m supports novel chip development from UK startups. This follows surging European investment - AI hardware startups raised €4.3bn across 61 deals in 2025 compared to €1.6bn in 2024.

Playground Global, led by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, will manage a new fund backed by the British Business Bank. The Silicon Valley firm plans its first non-US office in Britain, focusing exclusively on UK-based AI hardware companies. An additional £20m expands the Scaling Inference Lab to help firms prove technology and secure global partnerships.

Oriole Networks exemplifies the strategy's potential, partnering with AMD on photonic chips that use light instead of electrical signals. The investment directly addresses hardware bottlenecks limiting AI deployment, potentially accelerating Britain's position in the global semiconductor race.
