TPG Buys $2.4B OneMain Loans

TPG has agreed to purchase approximately $2.4 billion in consumer loans from OneMain Holdings under a forward-flow arrangement extending through June 2028. This deal builds on a previous $1.3 billion loan purchase, deepening TPG's push into asset-based lending. OneMain specializes in personal and auto loans for non-prime borrowers, a market where private capital is increasingly active.

The forward-flow structure means TPG will buy loans before they are originated, giving OneMain immediate capital to originate more loans. This arrangement helps the lender free up balance-sheet capacity and recycle capital efficiently. It highlights how private credit firms are expanding into markets traditionally dominated by banks, offering liquidity where legacy institutions have retreated.

This transaction is part of TPG's aggressive expansion into asset-based lending since acquiring Angelo Gordon in 2023. Just this week, the firm also agreed to buy $1 billion in leases from equipment finance group Elevex Capital. Broader industry trends show alternative asset managers using scale to capture consumer finance market share as banks continue pulling back from riskier lending sectors.
