Private equity giant TPG is significantly expanding its sports investment portfolio by agreeing to acquire Learfield, the dominant media and technology platform central to collegiate athletics monetization. The deal channels capital through TPG Capital and the specialized TPG Sports strategy, which launched last year to target global sports assets.

Learfield functions as the commercial engine for college sports IP, connecting over 12,000 brands with 1,200 institutions using a proprietary database of 125 million fan records. The platform manages crucial functions like sponsorship sales, ticketing via Paciolan, and digital services through SIDEARM Sports, placing it at the core of NIL monetization efforts across major conferences like the SEC and Big Ten.

This transaction solidifies TPG’s commitment to the sector, positioning Learfield to further capitalize on the commercial boom in college sports. Charlesbank Capital Partners will maintain a smaller, minority stake following the transaction’s expected close in Q3 2026, subject to customary regulatory reviews.

Acquiring Learfield grants TPG immediate control over a sophisticated infrastructure that manages fan engagement and lucrative commercial rights for numerous NCAA Division I programs. The deal structure suggests a clear appetite for firms owning the technology underpinning sports monetization.
