Brookfield is doubling down on Southeast Asian renewable energy despite the region's infrastructure and political risks. The Canadian asset manager plans to scale its Alba Renewables platform as part of a broader push into undercapitalised emerging markets.

The firm's 1.9GW Alba Renewables platform will serve as the foundation for expansion across Southeast Asia. This strategy forms part of Brookfield's Catalytic Transition Fund, which remains on schedule for its final close next year. The fund targets markets that have received limited investment compared to more mature regions.

Southeast Asia presents compelling opportunities for renewable energy growth, with countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand seeking to reduce fossil fuel dependence. However, regulatory uncertainty and grid infrastructure gaps have historically deterred large-scale institutional investors from committing significant capital.

Brookfield's move signals growing confidence that these markets are ready for institutional-grade renewable investments. The strategy positions the firm to capture first-mover advantages while the region's energy transition accelerates, potentially delivering outsized returns relative to developed market renewables.
