Ali Hussain didn't follow the traditional tech founder path. Instead of computer science, he earned a humanities degree at Cornell, won a Marshall Scholarship to Oxford, and briefly pursued a Ph.D. before realizing academia wasn't for him. At 23, he pivoted to management consulting at BCG, then joined early-stage startup Latch as its first operations hire, learning the venture capital playbook over six years.

In 2023, Hussain applied those lessons to launch Tabs, a New York-based AI fintech automating revenue recognition, billing, and collections. Recognizing his technical limitations, he partnered with deeply technical co-founder Deepak Bapat to complement his commercial vision and operational expertise.

The strategy paid off quickly. Tabs raised a $4 million pre-seed round co-led by Primary Venture Partners and One Way Ventures. The startup has since grown to roughly 180 employees, raised about $92 million in total capital, and reached a $400 million valuation, maintaining triple- to quadruple-year-over-year revenue growth.

Hussain credits his non-traditional background as a strategic advantage, noting that embracing volatility and non-traditional learning paths builds the resilience necessary for early-stage entrepreneurship.
